    RB199

The RB199 engine was developed and built by the Turbounion Consortium comprising Avio (Italy), Rolls-Royce (Great Britain) and MTU (Germany). Avio has a 20% share.

The RB199 engine equips the multi-role Tornado fighter aircraft.

Avio deals with the low-pressure turbine, the exhaust diffuser, parts of the afterburner and nozzle control unit accessory.

Avio also carries out the complete engine assembly and testing, as well as complete engine MRO.

    Main engine characteristics

    Fan diameter 28.3 in
    Overall pressure ratio > 23:1
    Bypass ratio 1.08:1
    Thrust range 42,5 - 74,1 kN (9550 - 16700 klb)

    Avio's module details

    Low-Pressure Turbine

The low-pressure turbine, located downstream from the intermediate pressure turbine, is a twin-stage turbine consisting of two modules, the stator and rotor.
The Stator or Low-Pressure Turbine Stator essentially consists of 20 stator vanes and a turbine support, which is the first-stage distributor of the Low-Pressure Turbine.
The Rotor or Low-Pressure Turbine Rotor essentially consists of a first-stage Rotor (comprising a rotor disk and 74 blades), an intermediate distributor (or second-stage distributor of the Low-Pressure Turbine) and a second-stage Rotor (comprising a rotor disk and 64 rotor blades).

    Assembly and Engine Testing

The RB199 engine is a three-shaft dilution turbojet with afterburner and thrust reverser. The rotating assembly consists of a three-stage low-pressure compressor, a three-stage intermediate pressure compressor and a six-stage high-pressure compressor. The single compressors are driven by the respective turbines.

The combustion chamber is of an annular type. The nozzle is variable in the afterburner area; the thrust reverser is of a “valve” type and is situated at the rear end of the turbojet.

    Other Components

Moreover, Avio is responsible for the design and manufacture of the following parts:

    • Turbine Exhaust Diffuser
    • Jet Pipe
    • Nozzle Control Unit Accessory

The Turbine Exhaust Diffuser, downstream from the Low-Pressure Turbine, essentially consists of an external casing, an inner cone and 15 hollow struts. All these parts are metal sheets welded into a single part.
