Marine
The interest of Avio in naval activities has distant roots, since the beginning of the last century, the attention to marine propulsion materializes in the study and implementation of engines able to respond to increasingly complex needs and at the leading-hedge at that time.
This impression was maintained over the decades through the significant and historical achievements for submarines (1903 experimental submarine "Dolphin" and the next class "Balilla" in the 20s), until the supply of propulsion plants with gas turbines for the Italian aircraft carrier - the GARIBALDI and the new CAVOUR - and various classes of Frigates for Italian, Peruvian, Venezuelan, French and, lately, Polish Navies. The turbine propulsion modules and automation systems for the integrated control of the platform are the Avio excellence in the marine sector. Avio cooperates in the development and production of the LM2500 turbine (with the new LM2500 + G4), derived from aeroengines and used for naval applications.
Today Avio is able to meet the needs of propulsion and automation of the more sophisticated ships: Automation essentially means a greater security, greater flexibility, control ability and intervention on plants with an improved global efficiency in the management of the ship.
Propulsion
Avio has played a major role in promoting the great technological revolution of the twentieth century in the field of marine propulsion. The laboratories and research establishments Fiat began the design and production of marine engines since 1903. Since then, safety and high performance have been consolidated features.
The history of Fiat motors reflects step by step the technologic evolution of the sector: from gasoline engines, installed on the first rudimentary submarines, diesel engines and, more recently, the modern, sophisticated propulsion system with gas turbines. Recently, Avio has developed its own know-how to the "state of the art" for marine applications in aero-derived turbine engines. Actually, Avio is General Electric’s partner and supplier for Marine System (Marine System Supplier - MSS). In this area you’ll find all our products in marine context.
